How the number works
The ADA guide allows a ramp to rise 1 inch for every 12 inches of length, written 1:12. So the ramp length in inches is the rise in inches times 12. Here are some examples at 1:12:
| Rise | Ramp length | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| 6 inches | 6 ft | 1 |
| 12 inches | 12 ft | 1 |
| 18 inches | 18 ft | 1 |
| 24 inches | 24 ft | 1 |
| 30 inches | 30 ft | 1 |
| 36 inches | 36 ft | 2, with a landing between |
Rules to know
- Slope: 1:12 at most. Gentler is easier.
- Rise per run: 30 inches at most. A taller rise needs a flat landing, then another run.
- Width: at least 36 inches clear between handrails.
- Landings: flat at the top and bottom of every run. At a turn, at least 60 by 60 inches.
- Handrails: on both sides when the rise is more than 6 inches, extending at least 12 inches past the top and bottom.
- Edge protection: a curb, rail or wide surface so a wheel cannot slip off the side.
These come from the federal ADA design guide for public buildings. Your home may follow different local rules, and some places need a permit. Check with your city, village or town building office before you build. Source: U.S. Access Board, ramps and curb ramps.
Before you buy or build
- Ask an occupational therapist what slope the person using the ramp can manage.
- Get at least two written quotes from licensed, insured contractors.
- Think about rain, snow and ice. Wisconsin winters make a surface with grip and a gentler slope worth the extra room.
- If you only need a ramp for a short time, ask about renting a modular ramp.
